If you can’t tell by my seasonal reading list posts, I love to read. I recently read a book called More Than Just Making It by Erin Odom. I expected to read a book about managing finances, but this book related to every aspect of my life. I’m not sure if the purpose of this book was to teach you to change your mindset, but this is exactly what it has done for me.

Lately, I have been in a place where I have felt down about the things that life has thrown my way. I’m not the type of person to reach out for help or admit being overwhelmed, but this book has opened my eyes. The resounding theme throughout the entire book was “change your mindset”.

I have started applying this concept to every area of my life. This includes health, finances, managing time, and my personal life. Changing my mindset has helped me make it through some pretty rough times in the past couple of weeks.

I started to think about the way that I view the things that happen in my life and I realized that it is ok to cry. It is also ok to feel down or defeated. This is a natural response, but you cannot stay here. Give yourself an hour to have a pity party, then gain the courage to change your mindset.

Change Your Mindset

Change Your Mindset To Change Your Health

Health is a tough topic to discuss because there are so many things that can happen. Everyone is essentially healthy until they’re not. It is so easy to beat yourself up asking what you did wrong or what you could have done differently. Instead of thinking this way, why not picture yourself overcoming this obstacle?

Learn everything that you can about the thing that you are faced with. Concentrate on taking care of yourself. Change the way that you eat, move more if possible, and drink more water. Do not dwell on a diagnosis. Replace your negative thoughts with encouraging words and move forward.

Change Your Mindset To Deal With Your Finances

Debt and making ends meet are major issues in today’s society. These issues affect more families than anyone would like to admit. People tend to be embarrassed or ashamed to admit to their family and friends when they need help financially.

More Than Just Making It talks about how Erin created a narrative in her head just in case someone asked her why her car was spotted at the government office. She didn’t want other people to think that her family was lazy or poor.

This should not be the case. No one should be ashamed to receive help. Change your mindset to gratefulness. Be thankful that government programs are available for people that need them. Make a vow to work hard to get to a place where you are able to find financial stability and help someone else in need. Don’t be ashamed to share your story because it may be exactly what someone else needs to hear.

Change Your Mindset To Manage Your Time

I’m sure you are aware that everyone has the same 24 hours in a day. The difference between average and above average are the things that you choose to do with your time. Instead of procrastinating or complaining that you don’t have enough time, plan your day strategically.

Use a planner and place the hard tasks towards the top of your list. This will make sure that you complete the hard tasks before you get tired. Wake up a bit earlier if you need to, but make time for breaks.

Don’t wear yourself out attempting to work nonstop. Time is something that you can never get back, so do not waste your time complaining about the lack of time.

Change Your Mindset

Change Your Mindset To Accept People

This is honestly the hardest topic to write about. In today’s political climate, it is hard to talk about acceptance without offending someone. Erin touches on it a bit in her book, but I’m just going to say it. People are different. Everyone thinks differently, looks differently, likes different foods, and has different interests.

Think about this. If all people were the same, the world would be pretty boring. With that being said, there is no place for hate. Change your mindset to one of compassion and acceptance. Love everyone and acknowledge other people’s feelings.

It doesn’t matter if you understand what they are going through or not. Compassion and acceptance will bring the world together in the hard times. Do not discount views and opinions different from your own. Agree to disagree while keeping your humanity intact. Love and respect your neighbors. The world will be better for it.

Change Your Mindset To Change Your Life

It is no secret that life doesn’t always go as planned. Life doesn’t come with a manual or study guide to follow. Things can be great one day and take a turn for the worst the very next day. There is no way to prevent that. Instead of getting stuck feeling sorry for yourself or others, try to change your mindset. Think positive thoughts and speak encouraging words to yourself each morning. This will set the tone of your day.

Don’t focus on the negative things, focus only on the positive. If you find yourself dwelling on the negative, change your mindset immediately. Smile more, love more, laugh more, and enjoy your life. This takes a lot of courage and other people may not understand, but do it anyway. Your life will change drastically.

  1. Sounds like a good book. I totally believe in the fact that our mindset matters more than anything. I’ve had to pick myself from multiple situations in life and I was able to do what was needed only when I changed the way I think. So with you there.
